Offsetting emissions by removing carbon from the atmosphere is a popular tactic for individuals, businesses and countries. But it's not the silver bullet that some would like to believe. Here are just a few reasons why over-relying on offsets is a dangerous approach.

1. Carbon credits can be poor-quality and ineffective
2. There aren't enough trees for everyone's offset plans
3. The burden for carbon sequestration falls on global South countries, which have done little to cause the climate crisis
4. Offsetting targets often rely on Negative Emissions Technologies, most of which aren’t yet proven to work.
