How Tideford Organics relaunched their award-winning Sweet Potato + Quinoa Soup with a new U.K spin - thanks to the British Quinoa Company.
Bringing Sweet Potato Back
In September 2016, Tideford Organics relaunched our homemade-style soups, sauces and pestos, becoming the UK's first organic vegan and gluten-free brand. In the process, we had to shelve some much loved flavours along the way. This included our award-winning Sweet Potato + Quinoa Soup. But this wasn't goodbye, just 'see you later'...
Searching for Superfoods
Having won Best Free-From Product in the Your Healthy Living Awards in 2015, and a Silver Taste of the West award in 2016, this soup also contains one of the world's most nutrient-rich ingredients, quinoa.
In a 1993 study, NASA concluded: “while no single food can supply all the essential life-sustaining nutrients, quinoa comes as close as any other in the plant or animal kingdom.” Quinoa is naturally gluten-free, easy to digest and contains all nine essential amino acids (as well as fibre, magnesium and iron).
So Tideford were keen to get this delicious and nutritious soup back on the menu.
British Quinoa to the Rescue
But we had some reservations. Whilst quinoa is incredibly good for you (and tasty), it often travels to the UK from as far away as the Andes. The surge in quinoa’s popularity in recent years has far surpassed its origins in countries like Peru, however, and there has been some controversy of late as to how demand is negatively affecting these farming communities.
Since 2006, the British Quinoa Company have been painstakingly researching the best possible method for farming organic quinoa as a viable UK crop.
Based on the family's farm in Shropshire, there is a strong focus on sustainably increasing yields, understanding final grain characteristics and achieving a high quality finished product.
Their hard work and commitment has been more than worth it, however, because they’re now able to supply certified organic quinoa - going straight into Tideford's new organic, vegan, gluten-free soup.
