Energy Star

Energy Star is a voluntary labelling programme introduced in 1992 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, which now runs it with the United States Department of Energy. Products can only carry the label if they are more energy efficient than standard models of the same type. It covers a range of product categories, including appliances, consumer electronics, heating and cooling equipment, and lighting.

Standard Summary

  • Each product category has its own energy efficiency requirement, set so that only the more efficient models on the market qualify

  • Products are tested in a laboratory recognised by the Environmental Protection Agency and certified by a certification body independent of the manufacturer

  • Certified products are subject to post-market verification testing, with a proportion of certified models bought off the shelf and re-tested each year
